We’re so close to our second Hashtek Solventless Seminar, happening March 2nd and 3rd at the Rosin Tech Labs facility in Los Angeles!
During the two-day class, attendees will get to dive deep into every aspect of solventless extraction through hands-on workshops taught by esteemed experts in their crafts.
We recently heard from a few of them in part 1 of this Q&A series, getting a sneak peek into what they’ll be covering and why they’re looking forward to the weekend.
Now we’re back to chat with a few more of our special guests — Humphrey Hashish, the master of freeze-drying, and Mendo Budsmith with his cutting-edge Cannagars — plus seminar teacher Ras Kaya Paul of Pacific Northwest Roots.
Kaya started working with the plant in the mid-90s while attending college near the Canadian border. From there, he built a successful breeding and growing enterprise — pioneering some of the first brick-mortar Cannabis collectives in Washington and creating nationally acclaimed hash genetics such as Kaya’s Koffee. Today, he uses a Hashtek 65t to create his award-winning six-star full-melt.
What can you expect to learn from these industry innovators at the Solventless Seminar? Keep reading to find out…
Tell me a little bit about what you’ll be covering during your Solventless Seminar session!
Humphrey Hashish: I’ll be covering the process of freeze-drying with a focus on terpene preservation.
The methods I’ll be sharing can be applied to both the small-batch maker as well as large-scale labs. If your freeze dryer’s drain water has terpenes in it, attending this seminar can help change that!
Mendo Budsmith: I’ll be doing a session on my Cannagars and covering pretty much the entire process from start to finish.
Packing the molds, how I take them out of the mold, and how I do my rosin wraps. Then also how I do the outer wrap, whether it’s a cannabis leaf or a tobacco leaf, all the way to how I package them up.
Ras Kaya Paul: Some of the crucial topics I’ll cover for the class are genetic selection, cultivation styles, and of course all the technical aspects of hash processing.
What are you most looking forward to about being in LA? Is there another session you’re excited to see, a maker you’re looking forward to meeting, or something you want to do around town?
Humphrey Hashish: I’m most looking forward to being a student during the seminar. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to listen to Kaya share his knowledge about this plant that brings us all together. Last year the highlight for me was Kaya’s talk about genetics and breeding.
I’m excited for Dave’s talk on genetics and cultivation, as I strongly believe it to be the most important step of making hash. Meeting and having the chance to be a student to both Mendo Budsmith and Hashcru is another thing I’ve been looking forward to.
Touring the Rosin Tech Labs facility and having the ability to learn from the crew that makes it run is another huge perk of this seminar.
The hash sessions in between seminar talks are yet another part I’m excited about. It’s a chance for everyone to meet, network, and share hash with each other.
Mendo Budsmith: As far as the seminar, I’m kind of excited to see what Hashcru has going on with the hash wraps that he does because I kind of make those as well. Some of the tech is similar to how I do my Cannagars, so I’m excited to bounce some ideas off of him and see if I can pick up a couple couple tips on the hash wraps.
Ras Kaya Paul: Last class I was able to link with Josh D. and visit FSOTD, this trip I’m solely focused on class and making myself available to the attendees.
How can these kinds of educational and networking events impact craft solventless makers? Why is it valuable for them to attend?
Humphrey Hashish: Hash education pushes progress and increases access to quality medicine. Networking offers the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals of which you can learn from, share knowledge with, examine their hash stash to see what other flavors people are finding, as well as a ton of other great reasons.
During the seminar, everyone is a student. We all have the ability and need to learn more. By coming together and sharing knowledge, we all can go home and increase the quality of medicine we provide to the final consumer.
Mendo Budsmith: I think it’s really cool because I’ve never really gotten the chance to talk one on one with a lot of these guys that will be at the seminar. So it’s neat from a hash maker or producer’s standpoint to meet these guys from around the country and even across California, to just kind of bounce ideas off of each other and share education.
As far as a student coming to the class, you’ve got a house full of the best people at what they do with their perspective crafts. I mean, you could show up for two days and pretty much walk away with all the knowledge you’re going to need to start a hash business, make some pre-rolls or gummies, you know, whatever you’re looking to do.
Ras Kaya Paul: Events like this are key to disseminating first-hand information alongside hands-on experience, which creates a mentorship style of learning that lends to greater success for the students. It’s also a nexus for genetic swapping and brand-building.
