Nestled deep in the redwoods of Humboldt County, just thirty minutes from Shelter Cove, lies one of California’s most iconic cannabis farms — Huckleberry Hill Farms, where Johnny Casali and Rose Moberly cultivate their legendary Whitethorn Rose.
This fall, Huckleberry Hill hosted a two-day hands-on hash class led by Bryantist, bringing together growers, hashmakers, and enthusiasts from across the country — all the way from the East Coast to the southern regions of New Mexico and Arizona — to learn, collaborate, and celebrate solventless culture. And for us at Hashtek, it was extra special — the official debut of the Bubble Tek 30-Gallon.
The Setting: Humboldt Magic
I stayed in Shelter Cove, one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. Between the crashing waves, the coastal cliffs, and the quiet calm of the Lost Coast, it felt like stepping into another world.

As a wildlife photography nerd, I was lucky to have my telephoto lens with me — I caught some incredible shots of black-tailed deer right outside my hotel and even spotted a few harbor seals on the rocks below. Falling asleep to the sound of the ocean was unforgettable.
Driving Into the Redwoods
The drive into Huckleberry Hill is an experience in itself. Twisting roads, fog drifting between the trees, and those massive redwoods that make you feel like you’ve gone back in time.

Some of these trees are over 2,000 years old and grow more than 350 feet tall — making them the tallest living things on Earth. Standing among them, it’s easy to understand why Humboldt grows such special plants. There’s just something about the air out there.
The Farm
Everything at Huckleberry Hill Farms is built around low-impact, sustainable farming practices. The plants grow in large, living soil beds full of microbial life — no bottled nutrients, no shortcuts. Johnny lets the soil and ecosystem do the work, keeping things in balance the way nature intended.

The plants here grow huge — 10 feet tall on average, with some pushing past 15 feet. It’s a completely different philosophy from what I’ve seen at farms in Southern California, where the focus is more “big ag” — maximizing resin per square foot under tight canopies.
Up here in the mountains, Johnny’s approach is the opposite. He’s making the most of his slice of the hillside, letting the plants stretch and breathe among the redwoods, Douglas firs, and tanoaks. That living-soil style gives the Whitethorn Rose its unmistakable terroir — resin that smells and tastes like the mountain it came from.
Day One: Harvest and Washing
Day one focused on harvest and washing, starting with a tour of Johnny’s garden. Then the real magic began — Bryantist demonstrating both traditional hand washing and the Bubble Tek 30-Gallon, which he helped us prototype and refine.

Bryantist was the first person to ever run the 30-Gallon Bubble Tek, putting it through its paces side-by-side with his perfected hand wash technique. After extensive testing, his conclusion was simple:
“The Hashtek gives me the same high quality hand washing provides — with a slight increase in yield.”
For the class, he showcased both approaches. Hand washing remains a great way to start learning the craft, but as Bryantist put it himself — if you can afford it, and you love tools (or robots as he calls them) that make your life easier, the Bubble Tek is the way to go.
Day Two: Pressing and Preparation
The next morning was all about pressing, curing, and packaging — diving into how the same bubble hash can be transformed into different end products. From cold-cured rosin to jam, batter, and fresh-pressed consistencies, Bryantist broke down his workflow in detail, showing how precision and patience turn good resin into something truly special.

The Bryantist Tool Kit
Beyond his teaching, Bryantist has also designed a set of ergonomic tools for collection, handling, and packaging rosin — a must-have for anyone looking to refine their process. His Bryantist Tool Kit includes 15+ specialized tools for whipping, mixing, and packaging at any scale, all packed in a lockable waterproof case. It even comes with a one-hour consultation with Bryantist himself — proof that he’s as dedicated to education as he is to innovation.
Johnny’s Story
Huckleberry Hill Farms carries a story unlike any other. After spending ten years in prison for cultivating cannabis, Johnny Casali returned home to rebuild his dream — transforming hardship into legacy. Today, his farm stands as a living symbol of resilience, authenticity, and community.
To be there — debuting the Bubble Tek 30-Gallon while washing his prized Whitethorn Rose — felt like a true fill circle moment.
The Story of Whitethorn Rose
Every strain at Huckleberry Hill Farms traces back to a plant Johnny grew with his mother when he was ten years old — a cultivar they called Fruit Loops, now known as Paradise Punch.
Years later, Johnny crossed that same Paradise Punch with Lemon OG to create what would become his flagship strain: Whitethorn Rose. It didn’t just stand out for its unique flavor and terp profile — it carried a story.
The name comes from the small town of Whitethorn, a place that sat at the heart of the war on drugs for decades. Rose was named after Johnny’s partner Rose Moberly, who brought new life and positivity to the farm when she arrived. Together, Whitethorn and Rose symbolize the blend of hardship and hope that defines Huckleberry Hill itself.
